Another of Disney’s princess kyaraben, but this time I used spaghetti as the base. We got our first spaghetti bolognese (or bolognaise) order last week for Dora the Explorer. Bad thing happen when we prepared the food as the electricity went off. The good thing was that it’s in the morning so we didn’t need light but I could not take the picture since that day was cloudy. It’s the first time ever that I didn’t have a picture record of our bento.

And as we’ve still got some spaghetti and the bolognese sauce from the order, I decided to make a different character for my record. After some thought I decided to make another one of those princess since lots of people asking me about that so I intended to make them all as soon as possible.

This time was Cinderella’s turn. While the Cinderella story already being told from hundreds of year ago and made into opera, theater, ballet, and movies, I think the most popular is the Disney’s version where I based mine. I couldn’t remember when was the last time I saw Cinderella, but the story is so classic that I’m pretty sure almost anyone know it. We even had this Indonesian version of Cinderella live action movie made in seventies, although I forgot the whole plot (but I’m sure it’s the same since it’s a Disney’s rip-off) and only remember the actress who play Cinderella.

Compared with the other princesses, Cinderella looks older than the others, but maybe it’s because the hair style. The pasta cut is like the usual princess cut; base, upper dress part, hair, face, lips, eyes, eyebrows, and nose line.

For the bento itself, we’ve got spaghetti, ragu bolognese served with shredded cheese and chopped parsley, chicken sausage with omelet shaped like flower, corn, broccoli chunk, cherry tomato, strawberry, and orange slice. I like this bigger container that it can store more foods. And I don’t know why the spaghetti looked very cluttered in the picture while it looked quite okay in real. I also added a slipper and the pumpkin coach pasta from our pasta collection to matched Cinderella theme for this kyaraben.

While trying to cook new recipes for my bento since I started two months ago, I’ve never done a bento using the menu from our usual cook book. It’s true that most of our usual dishes are not bento materials, but of course some of them can be made into nice looking bento. And that’s what I had in mind since this morning.

I have this, let’s say my specialty menu that my whole family like. It’s not that I often cook for them, in contrary, I’ve only cooked for them (my whole family) maybe 2-3 times since they’re living in different city so when we visit them we usually eat at restaurants. But I’ve cooked this menu for me and my wife more than 20 times, maybe once each month, that I’ve become very comfortable making it, it’s one of several dishes that I don’t need to read the recipe anymore. I’ve got the recipe from my steak book but I’ve tweaked the recipe several times.

The menu is consists of fish steak (I used John Dory fillet because it’s my wife favorite, but we can use red snapper or salmon fillet) served with spaghetti and pineapple salad. I usually add grilled shrimps with chopped garlic and celery to add more flavor. It’s very simple and quick to prepare (about 30 minutes until ready to serve), the longest time spent is dicing the pineapples and tomatoes for the salad.

I need to add several things for this menu become more presentable in bento way. I used my two tier bento box, one for the fruit salad and the other for the rest. I added strawberry to the salad box to strengthen the color ’cause I think that the colors from pineapples and tomatoes were too pale.

On the other box, I was planning to make a squid from the John Dory fillet, but I didn’t manage to do it. I think it’s almost impossible to make a good squid cut before or after the fish is grilled (I’ve tried both ways). So I made the squid from a slice of cheese, cut it with my art knife. The black eye was made with nori, cut with scissors, and the eyes were from cheese cut with two different size of straw.

The end result was not bad, I’m quite pleased since I can make a bento from one of my usual recipe and I hope that I can do something like this again in the future.

After making several rice onigiri bento, now it’s time to do a different type of bento. In bento mooks collection I have, they usually categorize the bento into four category; onigiri bento, sushi bento, noodle/pasta bento, and bread bento. I’ve made a few bread bento in my breakfast bento category, I never made sushi before so I have to practice around a little bit before attempted doing any sushi bento, so it’s a noodle/pasta bento time.

I really wanted to make a colorful bowtie pasta bento since they looked very cute in those bento mooks but I’d never seen those kind of pasta anywhere and I don’t really want to import those. The usual pasta that available around in most supermarkets are spaghetti, macaroni, fusilli, and lasagna, but they only available in one color, the usual yellow one.

We have regular stock of spaghetti and macaroni in our kitchen since my wife often cooked macaroni for our son while I often use spaghetti served with fish and fruits salad. We only had a little bit of macaroni and maybe my wife wanted to use them so I used the spaghetti with meat and tomato sauce.

I separate the meat sauce and the spaghetti with loads of lettuce to prevent the leak. There’s lots of open space around spaghetti area, so I added some carrot flowers with outer peas skin for the leaf and stalk. I don’t have flower mold so I used the knife.

For the other box pair, which separated in two container, I put some fruits cocktail with very tasty chocolate and mango pudding my wife made yesterday. The pudding was cast with rilakuma mold.

Finally, the octopus bento, my my their looked ugly indeed. I need to practice more with this sausage art, between boiling and cooking, the initial cutting, choosing the right sausage brands, among other thing. Hope next time I can find a good combination of those and make a good looking sausage ^_^
