I’ve used red (brown) rice for my chicken katsu bento and for Jojo’s birthday bento, but they were mixed with white rice before being cooked. Although eating red rice is healthier than just eating white rice (there are lots of article on this subject, mainly red (brown) rice has high fiber and low fat and can help controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, therefor good for diet) but most people still eat white rice for regular basis, mainly because we’re used to and also the average cost of white rice is cheaper. But since the growing of health conscious people, more people are eating red (brown) rice in more regularly, I know that most of gym lovers eat those rice on daily basis.

I still like white rice better, but I love red rice for its unique and natural color, and it’s perfect for my Halloween bento ^_^

I used 100% red rice to achieve darker color for the night sky. Not as dark as I expected but it’s still good. My wife suggested using black rice for great dark color, maybe I will try that someday, but I have to buy some black rice first (never bought and ate it but I know it’s very expensive).

The crescent moon was made with a slice of cheese cut with a bottle cap. The clouds were from slices of kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) and cut with knife. And those bats were nori cut with scissors.

The bottom part was regular bento filling, (from left to right) a strawberry, corn, a pair of quail egg skulls, two shrimps, a slice of marinated grilled salmon, edamame with food pick, and a broccoli chunk, with two pumpkin jacks carrot slice. I made more than two jacks, but there’s no more space to put them all. Those quail skulls were the same cut as my previous bento but I used nori instead of cutting the holes with a straw so they’re not the same like the skulls from yesterday.

Continuing with my first Halloween bento from yesterday, I made this one based on my sketch a few days earlier. The sketch was inspired from the ghost from Mario games, not exactly the same since I only drew it from my memory and imagination.

I didn’t see that someone already made the rice mold for this so I had to made the ghost onigiri with my own palm. I made them into a ball shape first and then squeeze them around a little here and there into the shape I wanted. The result was not bad, I really wanted sharper tails for them but too afraid they might break if I pulled too hard.

The sleight change from the Mario ghost was their teeth. While I still remembered that they have lots of sharp teeth, I made my version with vampire teeth (left ghost) and a pair of horns (right ghost). I think the horns failed their purpose since they didn’t look like horns, but they’re still cute ^o^

The quail skulls were direct copy from e-obento, IMO the best bento sites I’ve found on the web, it’s in Japanese but we can see the pictures, they’re all amazing. I used to study the bento from there and analyze how they were made. I used two different size of straw to cut the skulls’ eyes and nose, then sculpting the jaw with knife.

For the filling, grilled salmon marinated with soy sauce, honey, and black pepper, two boiled shrimp, edamame on foodpick, broccoli chunks, a cherry tomato, and grapes.

I’m quite happy with the final result, the salmon also tasted great. My wife said the bento was not scary at all but I didn’t want to make people screaming ^_^

My customized lowel ego lightbox had arrived , the test photo result was quite amazing and I really feel that my pictures quality improved a lot, not quite professional like result yet, but certainly not amateurish.

To celebrate this event, I made this special mealbox onigiri with the cube rice mold with MEALBOX cheese lettering made with the alphabet ham/vegetables cutter.

The mini carrots was cut from real carrot with knife and broccoli. I like the result, but I forgot to take their picture in close up. Next time when I made them I certainly will not forget.

The salmon was oven baked after marinated with soyu and other seasonings an hour before. I added a slice of lemon and leek to minimize the ‘fishy’ smell of salmon which my wife don’t like. The alumunium foil paper was used to prevent the liquid soyu sauce from leaking.

And for the fruit, since we still have lots of kiwi in our fridge, I had to use them before they become spoiled. The v-shaped cutter is mandatory for kiwi since the result looked great, easy to made, and have no parts to waste (except the skin after we eat them ) .
