I made this quick sandwich bento for breakfast. I cut two slices of white bread into 6 evenly parts and put them in oven for over 5 minutes, my wife really loves toasted bread. While the bread was in oven, I made a thin egg sheet (usuyaki tamago) with a crepes pan. After the bread was toasted, it’s time to cut some ham, cheese and lettuce.

I arranged the sandwich into a bento box along with 2 grapes and cherry tomatoes with food pick. I cut the egg sheet with my rilakuma cookie cutter, the teddy’s hands was cut with a large straw. Those teddies were too thin that they could not stand up well without some support, next time I should add cheese cut from a cheese bar and pasted behind the egg sheet to make them thicker.

I still had some jagged tamagoyaki from yesterday so I only need to make one more dish for today bento. And I saw this recipe of ham negimayaki and I thought it’s very easy to make and I got all the ingredients. All I needed to do was cut some green onion (leek) into 5 cm pieces and then boiled them for a couple of minutes. Then I cut some ham into narrower pieces than the leek and wrapped the ham around them. Then I used non stick pan with very little cooking oil and fried them about 3 minutes.

For the police car onigiri, I used the triangle rice mold and cut the top part a little bit so I could put a half cherry tomato there, paste a nori stripe and nori car window (cut with scissors) and put two slices of sausage wheels and cheese on top the wheels.

I arranged the police car onigiri and the ham negimayaki on one box, added broccoli chunks to fill the space. For the other box, I put yesterday tamagoyaki, two slices of mandarin orange, another broccoli chunks, and two lychees.

We can get canned lychees anywhere but rarely have fresh lychees sold at fruit stores since maybe they’re seasonal fruits, so when I saw them with a bargain price I immediately bought them. They tasted really good and very refreshing ^_^

I wanted to do a simpler bento for today, no piggy quail or cut animal sausages, with very little decoration on it. I found this simple but very nice way to prepare ham and lettuce that perfect for bento.

I just need to put the lettuce on top of ham and rolled them over, and cut them into 3 parts, very practical. I prepared chicken karaage also for this meal with a pair of yellow quail from the fridge, I prepared lots of them for making several animal shapes but found not enough time do to that

I still have unused rice mold from my bento equipment, so I used the flower shape mold to make the onigiri, added circle shape carrot for small detail.

I also realized that when making 2 bento box, I tend to concentrate my effort on one box (usually the main meal) and left completely blank idea on what to do for the other box. It also happened this time. I didn’t have any ‘clever’ idea for the vegetables, so I just cooked, cut, and then arranged them just to fill the box.

Luckily I have this very nice kiwi/fruit V-cutter. This is a very handy tool to have for decorating food, very easy to use and you’ll get the result quickly. If your friend don’t know that’s a tool to do that, I’m sure they will amaze when you show them those cut kiwi

Saturday is always a busy day. I was too tired and missed posting although I promised myself to do that. Luckily my son, Jojo, slept early so I can continue my unfinished tasks.

The other bento I made 2 days ago was quite simple also. I tried to make chicken karaage, the recipe was found on the web, I’m really sorry that I forgot which site since I usually write down the recipe on my notebook, not bookmarked the page because I will cluttered my bookmarks with hundreds of sites if I did that.

I think chicken karaage is a good bento recipe since its chunky shape easily fit into bento box.

I made twin bunny from rice mold, one is plain rice and I mixed the rice with egg yolk to make the yellow one, the result was brighter compared the one mixed with curry powder. Their eyes and mouth were done with nori cut with hole puncher and scissors.

I still have the boiled white egg and I tried to make a piggy face with that, the idea was from bento mook compilation I bought from Kinokuniya. I cut ham with knife for the ear, tail, and outer nose parts and cut the two holes on center nose with plastic straw. Lastly, sesame seed was put for the piggy eyes. Easy to make and the result was quite satisfying.

Lastly I add some carrots, parleys, and grapes to fill the bento box.

I made this early in the morning so my lovely wife can eat them while inside her car to the office.

Very easy to make, just bread with ham plus scramble egg and chopped broccoli. Put them together to make regular sandwich and cut them into several pieces to fit into the bento box.

Since we have lots of fruits in the fridge, I put some red and green grapes, strawberries, a slice of green apple, two slices of red apple, and tiny chunks of apple to fill the extra space.

I saw the rabbit ear apple decoration in several bento sites and decided to try made them myself. Had to made several try to do decent shape, need very sharp knife to do it though. The bad thing with apples is they change color very quickly even if we put them in salted water first before we packed them, but luckily the taste do not change very much for several hours.

If you have spare time to read further, besides want to share the bento I’ve made on this website, I also want to invite other bento lovers (especially Indonesian bento maker) to share their work since I know lots of you are making them out there. I noticed that right now lots of bento making tools are sold in lots of places in Jakarta (Carrefour, Food Hall, Ranch Market, Daisho, etc.) and during my regular visit to some of those places their inventory are rotating so I assumed those bento tool are selling well. I also found an online Indonesian bento tools seller and it seems lots of people are buying from them but I can not find any of their work on the web.

Please contact me if you have a bento flickr page, websites, or blogs and I will add you to my link list so we can create a great community to share our works and our ideas.
