I made this particular bento for a magazine photo shoot, so the idea is to make an original design that represent some traditional value. We are a nation with great and diverse culture but somehow our people don’t value them much any longer. I did a kyaraben workshop for a Japanese club in one college and then I visited them again during their Japanese culture week and saw that they have a great understanding and care about Japanese culture, which is good to have that knowledge and interest that I wish somewhere in our country in other college they also have an Indonesian culture week.

So from that experience I build up interest to make some cultural references about Indonesia into kyaraben work. We have so many source material that we can build upon them, and for the first I choose the easy one, a Balinese boy onigiri. Bali island is the most well-known Indonesian region in the world. Most people even don’t know that Bali is actually in Indonesia. I’ve been lucky to visited several places around the world and I must admit that Bali is one of a kind, and I always loved to visit there again and again with my family.

So while most Balinese now also wear casual attires, we can always meet some Balinese wear their traditional clothes while perform their Hindu’s rituals.

As Balinese are dark skinned, I mix white rice and soy sauce to make a brown colored rice. The traditional Balinese cap was made with yellow egg sheet. As for the clothes, it was made with yellow egg sheet, white egg sheet, tomato skin, and cucumber skin.

I’m quite pleased with the overall result and I determine to make another Indonesian theme bento when I’ve got time in between my schedules.

These Madagascar set were made several months ago and I have to admit that since we rushed for delivery therefore I didn’t have enough time to set up a proper photo shoot hence the pictures’ results were kinda below our own standard and I apologize for that.

I made these with the usual pasta sheet and cutting technique, since they kinda hard to be made with onigiri type kyaraben. I think Alex the lion was the easiest one although Gloria the hippo had fewer parts but I was having some troubles to make her skin color right.

Melman the giraffe also though to make but I kinda like the final result. As for Marvin the zebra, it’s the longest to make because it had so many parts for the stripes but somehow I messed thing up with the eyes part which taken the zaniness of the character. If I’ve got another chance I will make sure that I’ll get the eyes part right.

We all know that bento lunches are a staple in everyday Japanese cuisine as takeaway or as a home packed meal. A traditional bento is usually composed of onigiri, pickled vegetables, and fish or tempura. But how does one prepare a bento lunch for a toddler? Kids easily get bored with their packed lunch. Sometimes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich simply won’t cut it anymore and it often goes uneaten. You can mix it up a by preparing your child an easy to make bento that won’t take too much of your time plus, it will get your creative juices flowing as you create cute designs. You can also get your ingredients for your toddler bento box at your nearest grocer or Whole Foods.

Making a bento box for lunch is quite an enjoyable activity. Like playing poker, it can test your flexibility, resourcefulness, and creativity as well. So why not download party poker’s newest android app? You can practice your poker skills and also have fun with its unique game play. Downloading this app is really fast and easy and you can join whatever poker room you can find. You can also watch video tutorials online to improve your game and get pointers from the world’s best poker players such as Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Ferguson, and Mike Matusow as you watch the World Series of Poker. You can also join the tables at The Ritz Club for some live poker action. Playing poker is a challenging yet fun activity that you can also apply these attributes when preparing meals.

First off, always remember that you should avoid small pieces of food that can be a choking hazard. These are grapes, berries, cherry tomatoes, and nuts. If you must, try cutting them in half. A healthy bento lunch for a toddler should contain fruits and/or veggies, protein and rice or pasta. You can definitely use fruits such as strawberries, apples and melons and cut them into bite size pieces. When it comes to veggies, you can fill a separate container with peas, carrots and corn kernels. You can also include dairy products such as hardboiled eggs and string cheese or cheddar or Swiss cheese slices.

For the protein part of the bento, you can use cut up frankfurters or sausages, meatballs, chicken nuggets and croquettes. Instead of making the usual Bolognese spaghetti, why not make Carbonara or pasta Alfredo. You can also make a healthy pasta salad if you don’t want the sauce to mix with the other bento items. Finally for the dessert, as an addition to fruit, you can also add pretzels, cookies, biscuits or small bite sized chocolate such as Hershey’s Kisses.

I’ve got this character request from the same client whose requested Hatsune Miku kyaraben. I’d just heard the character the first time from our phone conversation, and searched around the web and realized that I’d already quite out of touch from this otaku thing. Turns out that Kirito is quite popular, he’s came from this Sword Art Online series. We can also watch online the complete anime series of the same title. I really didn’t know that before that right now we can basically watch all anime series for free via online streaming. I’ve watched several episodes already and quite hooked, so maybe I will try to finish all episodes when I’ve got some spare time.

The character itself is very stereotype Japanese anime hero, slender figure, loner type, that makes almost every gals in the whole series fall in love with the hero. With his black costume and black colored hair, we don’t have many color palettes for him so I only used dark brown (as a substitute for black), white, and skin colored pasta sheets. There are lots of Kirito facial gesture but I kinda like this one, with a reassuring smile when things didn’t go your way.

I’ve got this very interesting project a few months back and quite rather surprised that someone would requested this character. Hatsune Miku is arguably the most popular anime character in recent years. She’s not coming from an anime (Japanese cartoon series) or serialized manga (Japanese comic books) but rather from a character that created specifically as marketing tools for a singing synthesizer application (software). What’s really amazing was that since first came out this character became an instant hit among teenagers and taking the anime fans worldwide into Miku fans, without never purchased the singing software of her. I think that this Hatsune Miku character popularity right now is on par with (or maybe higher than) Rei Ayanami (from anime Evangelion) during her heyday.

There’s very little possibility a 5 years old kid would request this character for his/her birthday (unlike in Japan, this character haven’t seen a light of day in Indonesian mainstream media), and my assumption was correct since this was a teenager’s (an anime enthusiast I presumed) request.

Since I had to make lots of her, so I need to keep it simple. Instead choosing for the real version I came up with chibi (deformed or simplified) version of her and made entirely with colored pasta sheets, total of 15 (fifteen) parts with 4 (four) different colors.
