I knew Rilakkuma when I was into this kyaraben thing. I saw lots of bento pictures of this brown bear and wondering who was it, later I found out that it’s name is Rilakkuma, or ‘relax bear’ and it’s very understandable why the bear is very popular among bento makers, because it’s a very popular character (in Japan), very cute, and with it’s simplistic shape and facial features making it a perfect onigiri character.
While Rilakkuma already popular in Japan for several years, most people in Indonesia didn’t know the character’s name, because when I showed the picture around during my workshop, most of the participants only said it’s a bear shaped onigiri. It’s a different case when I showed the picture to my workshop participants from Japanese club members, all of them can name all the characters I showed to them (including that I didn’t know).
But I notice that in past months that this Rilakkuma gain some mainstream recognition. I’ve seen lots of Rilakkuma stuffs been sold at some stores. Therefore it’s just about time we’ve got requests for Rilakkuma theme bento.
I made 2 (two) versions for this Rilakkuma, one is using hand made onigiri, I used rice mixed with soy sauce for the head, chicken sausages and carrot slices for the ears, white egg sheet and seaweed for the nose, mouth, and the eyes.
The other version is two onigiri of Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma. I used my old bear shaped rice mold to make them. The yellow, pink, and white facial details were made using colored pasta sheet. All the black details were made using seaweed.
